What a Tide Forecast Actually Predicts
Tide predictions are calculated from long-term observations and known astronomical cycles. They estimate the time and height of high and low water at a specific reference station under typical conditions. Because the movements of the Moon, Sun and Earth are predictable, the astronomical part of the tide can be forecast far in advance.
The published height is not a promise that every nearby beach, harbor or estuary will reach exactly that level. It is tied to a chart datum and a station location. A cove several kilometers away may experience high water earlier or later, while shallow bays and estuaries can amplify or delay the change.
How Wind Changes the Water Level
Persistent onshore wind pushes surface water toward the coast. Water can accumulate in bays, at the head of estuaries and against seawalls, making high water higher and bringing waves farther up the shore than the table alone suggests. Offshore wind can have the opposite effect by pushing water away from land.
Duration matters as much as wind speed. A moderate wind blowing toward the coast for many hours may alter the observed level more than a short gust. Local geography also matters: a funnel-shaped bay can concentrate water, while an exposed straight coast may respond differently.
Air Pressure, Storm Surge and River Flow
Low atmospheric pressure allows the sea surface to rise, while high pressure tends to suppress it. During a coastal storm, low pressure and onshore wind act together to create storm surge. If that surge arrives near astronomical high tide, flooding and wave run-up can extend beyond the area implied by the predicted tide height.
At river mouths, heavy rain and high river discharge can further raise water levels or slow the outgoing tide. This is why a familiar estuary may behave differently after prolonged rainfall even when the tide table looks ordinary.
Waves Are Not Included in Tide Height
Tide height describes the underlying water level, not the highest point reached by breaking waves. Swell, local wind waves and wave run-up can wash far above the predicted level, especially on steep beaches, rocks and harbor walls. Two days with the same high-tide prediction can therefore look completely different at the shoreline.
For swimming, fishing, rock walking or photography, check wave height, period and direction as well as the tide. A rising tide combined with large swell leaves less escape time and can cut off rocks or beach access before predicted high water.
A Five-Step Safety Check Before You Go
First, use the nearest appropriate tide station and note both the time and predicted height. Second, confirm whether the tide will be rising or falling during your activity. Third, check the marine forecast for wind direction, swell and warnings. Fourth, look for recent rain if you are visiting an estuary or river mouth. Fifth, observe the shoreline for several minutes on arrival and identify a retreat route.
Treat the tide table as the astronomical baseline, then add a safety margin for weather and local conditions. If observations disagree with the forecast, trust the water in front of you and move to higher ground rather than waiting for the table to become correct.
